Let me just start out by saying that the Sheraton North Houston at IAH is NOT your “typical” airport hotel. The hotel is not fancy, or bougie by any means, but its the staff and all around culture of the hotel that makes it great!
The Hotel itself is on the older side, and in need of some refurbishment, but the staff, both times I have stayed there have been totally great, and the SPG Platinum recognition is off the charts for most hotels, especially an airport Sheraton.
I booked this stay as a layover at the beginning of my Dubai / Abu Dhabi trip I am currently on! I of course booked the hotel using the SPG app, and paid a total of $87.00 a night, which is quite reasonable for Houston and for the attention you receive!
Both times I have stayed at this hotel, the check in process not only went smoothly, it was one of the best parts of the stay, this time was no different!
The agents at the front desk are always extremely friendly and welcoming! When I arrived the agent immediately recognized my SPG platinum status and thanked me, which I always appreciate!
I did mention that last time they spoiled me with one of only 2 suites that had a balcony, and she looked and they were both booked, but she offered me a bi-level suite ,”because I was a valued platinum guest” and I accepted. The nice agent did say it was by the elevator and if that disturbed me to please let her know and she would find something else . In all honesty, the elevator DID disturb me, but because she was so nice and generous I just dealt with it and did not want to complain, so I didn’t say anything.
Another surprise, that I have never seen at any other spg property was she asked me to pull a ticket from a basket to reveal my prize for being platinum. I was pleasantly surprised at this and I picked a free 1500 starpoints, which was totally awesome, and unexpected!
The suite was nice, nothing fancy , and like I said before was in need of update or refurbish, but it was basically a 2 story suite, with living room and powder room down, and bedroom and bath upstairs.
The suite was located on the top floor right across from the Sheraton Club entrance and beside the elevator.
As I said previously, this hotel could use a refurb, BUT it is VERY clean and VERY well managed which to me I would rather stay in then a bougie , yet dirty and poorly ran hotel.
Even though I did not complain, I would not recommend staying in this room if noise bothers you at all! The elevator bank it literally on your wall and its very noisy…. I was so tired it didn’t matter but for some it may have, so beware.
The Sheraton Club
Although the club was open during my stay, like many other Sheraton’s, the club is NOT staffed during the weekend, I wrote about that here. Because the lounge was closed, I was given vouchers for appetizers that night and breakfast that next morning in the main restaurant. I only used the breakfast vouchers the following morning, and it was an OK experience.
Parking is self parking and it is free, which is always a welcome anymore with many hotels charging for this, which I find ridiculous! and there is always plenty of it, with entrances on each side of hotel leading to elevators so you don’t have to walk very far
SPG Points Earning
Because I am platinum with SPG I earned 3 points per dollar spent on base rate, and I chose the welcome platinum gift of 500 points. Also because of the current promo SPG has going on, the SPG More Nights, More Starpoints Promo, I earned an additional 250 points per night because have already stayed more than 3 nights since promo start. And because of the hat draw at the front desk I scored an additional 1500 points. My total haul for this $90 a night stay was 2,472 SPG points. This is a great amount of Starpoints for such a short and cheap stay!
Follow Up Email
I always get an email asking me to do a survey, but from this hotel I received a personalized email from the front desk manager asking how everything was… I truly like this and this is what I mean about the hotel culture from the top down… The small touches !
Overall, even though this is NOT a luxury hotel, nor one of the newest hotels, It IS in fact, one of my choices in Houston because I really love the way you are treated ! I often say that no matter the quality of hotel or room you get, the SERVICE is what makes or breaks a hotel, and the service truly makes this one! Both times I was treated like a king, and upgraded to the best room(s), and I truly appreciate the culture and attitude of the hotel staff here! I do recommend this hotel, especially for a SPG / Marriott Elite member!
